What is the ALP?

gabik524

Welcome back friends! Today's post will explain what the African Library Project is and how I came to find the organization.

The African Library Project was founded in 2005 by Chris Bradshaw. Bradshaw was inspired to start the program after visiting the country of Lesotho and witnessing the amount of poverty and illiteracy. Since then, the ALP has founded hundreds of libraries across the continent of Africa to work towards Chris's goal of ending this cycle of poverty and illiteracy in these countries.

So, how did I come to find out about the ALP?

As many people know, I love Broadway musicals and I follow many pretty closely on Instagram. So, when Mean Girls Broadway hosted a book drive for the African Library Project in 2019, I got pretty interested. It seemed like a cool organization and I wanted to learn more. Unfortunately, I kind of forgot about the whole thing until I started thinking of ideas for this project. I remembered that I had seen something with a book donation organization on Instagram a couple years ago with the Broadway show. I scrolled through the Mean Girls Instagram account until I found who they had worked with. I went to the ALP website and put in my application. I was approved a couple weeks later and got to work!

If you'd like to keep learning about the ALP, visit https://www.africanlibraryproject.org/ to learn more about how the project was founded and "meet" some of their amazing volunteers and staff!

Stay tuned for tomorrow's post on what kind of books to donate and how to donate to the project!
